Wow, talk about bright!

Discovered in 1995 by Christy Hensler of The Rock Garden nursery, this golden-yellow variegated periwinkle is taking the gardening world by storm.

Why is 'Illumination' so special? The most obvious reason is the foliage. Edged in dark green, the centers start out chartreuse, turn golden yellow, and finally mature to a cream color. The stems are more subtle in their attractiveness, winding under the leaves in shades of pink to pinkish-red. And of course, it has the same blue flowers that we've all come to love on periwinkle.

'Illumination' makes an excellent groundcover in borders, rock gardens, or atop walls and containers where it can tumble down the sides. A fast grower, it will fill in and cover bare spots quickly or work well as a perennial addition to your containerized plantings.

This cultivar has undergone extensive trialing and has been found to perform quite well in many different conditions. For best results, plant it in moist, well-drained soils with partial shade -- too much sun can bleach the color right out of the leaves.

Although drought-tolerant, a regular watering schedule will help when getting the plant established. A spring application of time-release fertilizer will also help.
