There's an old proverb that says "Why should a man die whilst sage grows in his garden?" (I suspect this applies to women as well). That's all fine and well, but regular sage has always been a little large and floppy for my small garden. But with a sage as attractive and unassuming as this one, there's really no excuse not to grow it any more. Barely reaching 18" in height, this cultivar forms a rounded mounded of woody twigs covered in heavily textured, grayish-green, oblong leaves streaked with white, purple, and pink. In May short spikes of lavender-blue flowers appear over the foliage, attracting bees and butterflies alike.
Like regular sage the leaves are highly aromatic and great for cooking. Place a few alongside a roast chicken as a garnish or chopped up fresh with sauteed potatoes. They go very well with dishes high in starch or fat and are loaded with antioxidants. Sage is another herb that really needs good drainage to grow. It can tolerate a little bit of shade and a wide range of soils from dry to wet, but the water needs to drain or else the roots will rot. It looks stunning with Monarda 'Petite Delight'.. Pot size: 4.5"sq x 3.5" (475 ml, or .5 quarts).
