Most of us are familiar with purple coneflowers, but there are lots of other coneflower species out there that only collectors, breeders, or naturalists know about. Although some are very different, others have more subtle differences like the color of their pollen.

Pale purple coneflower differs visually from our 'regular' coneflowers in color and leaf type. The leaves are long, thin, and covered with stiff hairs that make it a little more drought tolerant than purple coneflower. The flowers are a very pale pink-purple with thin drooping petals surrounding a bristly copper-orange cone in the center.

I really like this flower in partial shade; when planted in full sun it sometimes bleaches out and doesn't look as nice. I plant it near other coneflowers so that they can all hybridize freely while providing a buffet of sorts for the goldfinches in the winter.
